Community Service
Information

The Mission of the Valparaiso Family YMCA is "to provide for lifelong personal growth and the development of a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all." No one is denied YMCA membership due to a lack of financial resources. Financial aid for memberships and programs is provided by YMCA members and other community donors through the Y's annual "Strong Kids" Campaign. No other funding sources address this need.

In 2006, the Valparaiso Family YMCA provided 251 memberships to local group homes and human service agencies totaling $130,713 in financial assistance. We also subsidized memberships, program fees and childcare assistance to low-income families totaling $103,964, for a total of over $249,143 in assistance to more than 600 men, women, and children in our community!

This year's Strong Kids Campaign goal is to raise enough dollars to address the growing needs of our community. If you are interested in helping the "Strong Kids" Campaign, please direct correspondence to:

Our Mission Statement:

"The Valparaiso Family YMCA is an inclusive, interfaith, charitable organization founded in Christian principles and traditions, dedicated to instilling the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and providing for lifelong personal growth and the development of a healthy spirit, mind and body for all."

Who is this "for all" and what does that mean in dollars to the Valparaiso Family YMCA?

We provide memberships to clients of these human service agencies at no charge:

  • Hilltop House
  • Christian Haven Homes
  • Moraine House
  • Bridges Program for Youth (A Porter-Starke program)
  • In-PACT
  • Elm House
  • ACT program (P-Starke)
  • Appletree Home
  • Greenwich House
  • Hilltop Neighborhood
  • Opportunity Enterprises
  • Women's Recovery Home
  • Alice's House for Women
  • Adolescent Intensive
  • S.M.A.R.T.
  • Respite Care Services
  • Supervised Transitional
  • LC Supported Living
  • The Caring Place

Just as important, "for all" means the many families and children, low-income, and disabled adults that receive their memberships for as little as 5% of the regular membership fees:

  • 49 families serving 203 parents and children
  • 88 single parent families serving another 270 parents and children
  • 67 disabled and/or low-income adult memberships

We also helped over 30 children attend childcare programs by subsidizing their childcare.

Total value of financial assistance provided as of December, 2006: $249,143!

Thanks to the many generous donors from our membership and community that help us in meeting our Mission to serve "all" a reality!
