American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification & Lifeguard Instructor Certification
This combined course will help candidates develop the skills and experience necessary in order to become a Lifeguard or Lifeguard Instructor. The Lifeguard Certification course includes instruction in surveillance skills to help recognize and prevent injuries; rescue skills – in the water and on land; first aid training and professional rescuer CPR – to help prepare for any emergency; and professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons. Instruction in planning, organizing, and conducting the courses and presentations in the Lifeguarding program in accordance with the requirements of the specific course or presentation they will be teaching, and evaluating participants.
Lifeguard candidate prerequisites: Must be age 15 for program enrollment; swim 300 yards continuously; swim 20 yards front crawl or breaststroke, retrieve 10-pound brick in 7 to 10 feet of water, swim back to starting point, and exit pool without using steps or ladder - within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Lifeguard certification requirements: Must attend all classes; demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities; demonstrate competency in the 3 final skill scenarios; and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in the 3 sections of the written exam.
Lifeguard Instructor candidate prerequisites: Must be age 17 for program enrollment; possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate; possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate; and successfully complete the pre-course section.
Lifeguard Instructor certification requirements: Attend and actively participate in all course sessions; successfully complete class activities, including required practice-teaching assignments; complete the Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission Instructor Self-Study/Pre-Test; score at least 80% on the basic-level Administering Emergency Oxygen final written exam; and score at least 80% on the Lifeguarding Instructor Course final written exam.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification
This course is for individuals who need to renew their certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding. The course includes a comprehensive review and written test of all lifeguarding skills. A challenge format (no teaching or coaching) will test all other skills. Course prerequisites: current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding; swim 300 yards continuously; swim 20 yards front crawl or breaststroke, retrieve 10-pound brick in 7 to 10 feet of water, swim back to starting point, and exit pool without using steps or ladder - within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Note: this course does not include re-certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
