The Valparaiso Family YMCA offers certified health and safety courses designed to respond to emergencies, including American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification & Recertification courses, a CPR & AED certification course, and a First Aid course. In order to participate in our Recertification Courses, participants must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Blended learning, e-learning, and a swimming pretest will be required for all certification courses.

Lifeguarding Certification & Re-Certification
American Red Cross Lifeguard Course | Ages 15+ | $175 Member/$225 Non-Member
This lifeguard certification includes CPR/AED and First Aid. Class teaches the basics for lifeguarding only and is a highly accepted lifeguard certification nationwide.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification | Ages 15+ | $100 Member/$150 Non-Member
This course re-certifies Red Cross lifeguards. Participants must hold a current Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

A swim pre-test is required to enroll. Once you complete the pre-test, you will receive a pass to sign up for the course at the front desk. Pre-test: 300 yard swim, 25 yard swim with brick removal from the deep end, and 2 minute tread without hands.
Course requirements from the Red Cross:
CPR for the Lay Person | $65 Member / $85 Non-Member
The Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age – adults (12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED valid for two years.
CPR for Professional Rescuers & Health Care Providers | $80 Member / $100 Non-Member
Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies. This program combines discussions with video and hands-on training. Course covers how to respond to emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants will be trained on CPR (one- and two-rescuer), AED, Ventilations (including BVM) and Choking (conscious and unconscious). Available in person and via our blended training method, which combines online work with hands-on skills sessions, our training delivers the latest information in the format that suits you best. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class portion.
Those requiring the First Aid Training course may register with an additional fee of $30/Members or $35/Non-Member. Must register in person to receive discount. Call 219.462.4185 for more information.
